Ford Racing Australia will mount its largest and most professional assault on the 2002 V8 Supercar Series with 13 factory-supported teams consisting of 18 top-line drivers from Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.Ford Racing Australia’s policy of supporting a group of leading teams and not simply having a factory-supported outfit is sure to provide rewards in 2002.2001 was a solid year for the Blue Oval improving from the pervious year’s one round win to four overall victories as well as improving pole positions from two to six.“There’s no doubt that last year all the Ford Racing teams made some great strides against the opposition,” said General Manager of Ford Racing Australia Howard Marsden.“For 2002 we are aiming to take another step up and truly challenge for the V8 title and return to the winners lists at Australia’s most important motor race – Bathurst.“There’s a true sense of enthusiasm amongst our teams and drivers. This is all important in what is without doubt the closest circuit racing competition anywhere in the world.“From a Ford Racing point of view we will continue to provide financial and the much needed technical assistance to provide our teams with the best opportunity.Ford Racing Australia will continue to support feeder categories of racing, with the priorities being the Ford Racing Australia Formula Ford Championship and the Ford KartStars Series.“Formula Ford has been the breeding ground for racing drivers in this country and around the world since the 1960s,” said Marsden.“Almost everyone on the V8 grid has raced Formula Ford, with a great number of them taking the title.“With Formula Ford and now KartStars going into its third year, Ford Racing Australia is further developing the next generation of Australian V8 heroes.“The success of Formula Ford is already there and will be further on show at the endurance events in Queensland and Bathurst, when the current crop of young guns get their chance alongside today’s V8 heroes. The Ford Racing Australia support for V8s will be backed-up with a determined marketing and public relations strategy, which is sure to benefit not only the Ford Motor Company but also the many sponsors that support the Falcon teams as well as the V8 Championship Series itself.“The benefits of the racing program are not only welcomed by the Ford Motor Company, there is also the great promotional benefit presented to the wide range of corporate sponsors who support our teams,” said Marsden.“Ford will promote its drivers through a wide range of commercial and dealer-based programs, with the aim of making the drivers heroes to not only the motor sport fans but more importantly the wider general public.“Amongst our Ford Racing drivers we have some of the most charismatic and popular people in all of Australian sport.“We want the Australian public to embrace these stars like Olympic and football heroes – the best way we can do this is have success on the track and market that success to the general public.“2002 is sure to be a challenging year for Ford Racing Australia, but we have now got the ingredients together and we are confident that this year will be a successful one.”

With motor racing playing such a significant part in its heritage, it seemed quite appropriate that 2001 proved to be a record year for Holden both in the showrooms and on the track.Comfortably winning the sales race, Holdens performance on the racetrack and beyond was like never before, with the highlights including four national championships, two manufacturers crowns, the gruelling Australian Safari and the two biggest V8 races of the year.In the V8 Supercar Series, the Holden VX Commodore continued the dominating trend of its predecessors, winning more than double the rounds of its arch-rival, the Ford Falcon AU, while Commodore drivers also claimed positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10 in the top 10 point standing for the season.Holden Racing Teams Mark Skaife backed up his 2000 Shell Championship win by again taking the series for Holden the fourth victory in succession for Commodore and the sixth in nine years of the V8 Supercar era securing the title with a win with Tony Longhurst in the V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst. That win was Holdens 21st at Mount Panorama Holdens unwavering commitment to motor racing over 34 years reflected by its success in Australias great race.As a direct consequence, Holden owners have benefited over the years with the motor racing program being used as a test bed for engineering improvements, particularly in the areas of brakes, suspensions and aerodynamics. In 2002 Holden’s commitment is even stronger with further emphasis being on its various racing programs, all designed to continue the Holden tradition of winning on the track and in the showrooms.
